What to Do With Outdated Edition and Old Syllabus Books

Bookaao Blog ⏱ 3 min read

Short answer: Check whether the syllabus for that subject has actually changed. Books for unchanged syllabuses often still have buyers, while books for a replaced syllabus or a discontinued exam pattern are harder to sell and are better passed on or recycled.

Check whether the syllabus changed

An older edition is not always useless. Many college textbooks and reference books change very little between editions. School books and exam guides are different, because a revised syllabus or exam pattern can make a whole book out of date. Compare the contents of your edition with the current syllabus before deciding anything.

State the edition clearly if you list it

Buyers search for specific editions, so write the edition and year in the listing and say honestly if the syllabus has changed. A clear, truthful listing avoids disappointed buyers and cancelled orders. Add clear photos of the cover and the contents page so the edition can be confirmed at a glance.

Price it realistically

An older edition usually sells for less than a current one. Look at how similar listings are priced and set your price a little lower if the edition is not the latest. Our second hand price guide explains how buyers judge a fair price.

Other options if it will not sell

If the book is no longer useful for exams, you can pass it to a junior, donate it to a school or community library, or give it to a recycler. A book with notes written by a topper can still be helpful to a friend who studies the same subject, even if the edition is old. Sorting books into keep, sell and pass on makes the job easier.

A quick checklist before you list or discard

Ask yourself four questions. Is the syllabus for the subject the same as when the book was printed? Are the pages complete and readable? Can I state the edition and year clearly? Would a student in this class or exam still find it useful? If the answer to the first three is yes, listing is worthwhile, even at a lower price. If the answer to the last is no, passing the book on or recycling it is a better use of your time than waiting months for a buyer.

Where to list the rest

Books with a current syllabus and good condition are the best ones to list. See how to sell books on Bookaao and the guide on selling old books online in India.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sell an old edition of a textbook?

Yes, if the content is still useful. State the edition and year clearly in the listing so buyers know exactly what they are getting.

How do I know if a book is out of date?

Compare its contents with the current syllabus or exam pattern. If major topics are missing or have been replaced, the book is out of date for that exam.

What can I do with books I cannot sell?

Pass them to juniors, donate them to a school or library, or give them to a recycler.
