Short answer: Start with NCERT and one standard book per subject for JEE Main, then add Advanced-level problem books once your basics are solid. Most students do not need two full shelves from day one.
Start with NCERT and one core book per subject
JEE Main is built on the Class 11 and 12 syllabus, so NCERT chemistry and a core textbook each for physics and maths cover most of the concepts. Buying five books for one subject early on usually leads to half-read books and duplicated chapters.
When Advanced-level books make sense
Advanced-level problem books are most useful after you can finish a chapter's Main-level questions comfortably. Until then they tend to lower confidence rather than build it. Add them chapter by chapter instead of buying the whole set at once.
What is usually fine second hand
Concept books and problem books of the same edition are often fine second hand because the content does not change much. Check the edition, the missing pages and how much of the solution space is already filled in.
What is better bought new
Buy a fresh copy of anything with a changing syllabus or a year-specific question bank, and mock-test books you plan to attempt under exam conditions. A used copy with answers already marked defeats the purpose.
A simple buying order
- Class 11 and 12 NCERT for all three subjects
- One concept-plus-problems book per subject
- Previous year question papers

Frequently asked questions
Do I need separate books for JEE Main and JEE Advanced?
Not at the start. Build the basics with NCERT and one core book per subject, then add Advanced-level problem books chapter by chapter.
Are second hand JEE books a good idea?
Yes for concept and problem books of the right edition. Check the condition, edition and missing pages first, and prefer new for mock tests you want to attempt fresh.
Can I sell my JEE books after the exam?
Yes. You can list them on Bookaao and the sale amount is settled to you after delivery, minus the platform fee.
