Short answer: Use previous year CAT questions after you finish a topic from your book, to see how the exam tests it. Then use the questions you miss to decide what to revise next, rather than collecting additional books.
Why past questions matter
Practice books are written by authors and may not match the style of the actual exam. Previous year questions show how the exam frames a topic. They also help you judge how much depth each topic needs, so you spend time where it counts.
Attempt them after each topic
Finish a topic in your quant, verbal or data interpretation book, then solve the previous year questions on it. If you do well, move on. If you struggle, return to the book, work through the solved examples again and then try the questions again.
Analyse every mistake
- Concept gap: you did not know the method
- Calculation error: you knew the method but made a slip
- Time pressure: you took too long to finish
- Misreading: you answered a different question
Write the reason next to each wrong answer. Over a few weeks the pattern shows you what to fix.
Cover all three sections
CAT has verbal ability and reading comprehension, data interpretation and logical reasoning, and quantitative ability. Check the latest exam notice for the current structure. Do not spend all your time on the section you enjoy, since each section is scored on its own.
Add timed practice later
Once your topic-wise practice is steady, solve full sections against a timer. Then move to full-length papers when you are comfortable. Our CAT reading habit guide helps with verbal preparation, and the MBA entrance books comparison helps you pick books.
Choose what to skip carefully
Previous year questions also tell you what you can afford to skip. If a topic rarely appears and takes long to learn, it may deserve less time than a frequent topic that you can master quickly. Do not skip topics based on a single year, though, because patterns can shift. Review several years together before deciding, and revisit the decision after your first few full-length papers. This way you spend time where it improves your score and avoid buying extra books for topics with a small share of questions.
Books and resale
You can find prep books at second hand books and new books, and you can sell your CAT books once you have finished.
Frequently asked questions
When should I start solving previous year CAT questions?
After you finish a topic, so you can test yourself on how the exam asks about it.
Do I need many books if I solve past questions?
Usually not. A few good books with past questions and timed practice are enough for most students.
How should I track mistakes?
Write the reason beside each wrong answer, such as concept gap, calculation error, time pressure or misreading, and review them weekly.
